What the comparison usually misses
The headline price per kilowatt-hour flatters lead-acid and always has. The number that matters is cost per usable kilowatt-hour per cycle, and once depth of discharge and cycle life are folded in, the gap narrows sharply and often reverses. A lead-acid bank delivering half its nameplate capacity for 600 cycles is not competing with a lithium bank delivering 90 % of its capacity for several thousand.
Where lead-acid still makes sense
Cold storage without heating, installations where the bank rarely cycles, and situations where the up-front budget is the hard constraint. Flooded cells also tolerate abuse that would trip a lithium battery management system, and they can be revived from mistakes that would end a lithium bank outright.
Practical differences on site
Lithium banks weigh a fraction as much for the same usable energy, need no ventilation for hydrogen, and hold their voltage far flatter through a discharge, which means the inverter sees a steadier supply. Lead-acid needs a vented enclosure, periodic equalisation on flooded types, and a charge profile the controller must be set up to deliver correctly.
